We are thrilled to have our Intuitive Surgical project with RMW architecture & interiors in the pages of June's Interior Design Magazine! We created 2 large scale pieces for this workplace project, a whirlwind of our Tailfeathers fixture for the lobby and a fully custom Branches fixtures for the Cafe space. ISI is a company leading the way in advanced robotics systems for minimally invasive surgery. Their motto “pairing human ingenuity with technology” was a serendipitous fit us as we pride ourselves on using the best design technology while also adding a “human touch” to every piece . We worked with RMW Architects to develop 2 custom products for this Silicon Valley workplace.
The first design was based on an existing Yellow Goat Design standard, Tailfeathers. RMW sought “bright, angular” pieces while also seeking elements that spoke to the indoor/outdoor design internet of the workplace. This custom Tailfeathers is over 20 x 17 feet and mimics the circular pattern of a whirlwind or a herd in formation.
The piece also speaks to the idea of taking flight and branches or limbs as an extension of the work that ISI does. The “Arctic Ice” acrylic blades, in varying sizes, create perspective and are connected to a rolled aluminum tube finished in Prismatic Powdercoat “Golden Rod.
The rods are sprinkled with a row of LED bi pins to create movement and intrigue from day to night. This large-scale piece can be seen as you enter the building from a distance and only becomes more awe-inspiring and uplifting as one approaches the entry.
The 2nd piece, nicknamed our “Branches” feature is located in the cafe area of the space. This custom rod fixture is 20 x 16 x 11 feet and is made from similar frosted acrylic elements that are in the shape of budding leaves on branches.
The rods are made from powder-coated aluminum and attached from stainless steel cables. The piece cascades like rainfall or a futuristic tree and draws the client from the entryway into the cafe area to create a dramatic biophilic design. The piece is unlit and sculptural, using natural light only to create sparkle and a moment of modern design reflection.
